About

I am nearing the end of my doctoral work in philosophy at York University. My main areas of research are multiculturalism, political theory, and legal philosophy. I earned a BA (Hons) and MA from McMaster University, where I completed a thesis entitled "Liberalism and Minority Rights"which dealt specifically with the issue of faith-based arbitration's potential place in a liberal democracy.

My current PhD dissertation, 'Uneasy Relations: Liberalism, Minorities, and The Significance of Disagreement', explores the relationship between Political Liberalism and Minority Rights and the means by which to mediate the relationship between comprehensive doctrines and liberal values.

My doctoral work concentrates on Public Reason, Minority Rights and the significance of disagreement. In particular, I am interested in how Rawlsian political theory deals with deep disagreement and the implications this raises for minority cultures in liberal democracies. I find Rawls's framework, due to its liberal commitments and narrow interpretation of what 'respect for persons' entails, we are left with a political and legal framework that is unable to take cultural (including religious) identity seriously. I offer a detailed breakdown of Rawls's commitments and the frameworks inherent shortcomings. I then consider, in more detail, the works of Ronald Dworkin in political and legal philosophy. I ultimately argue that adopting a Dworkinian methodology (i.e. interpretative model) gets us around the problems posed by Rawls's framework while also providing us with a more substantive, and viable, view of 'respect for persons'. For more on my doctoral studies, please feel free to contact me.

I am also a graduate fellow at McLaughlin College (York University) and hold a Fellowship at the Nathanson Center (Osgoode Law School) and the York Center for Practical Ethics.

I am co-author of a forthcoming book (2012) entitled Ethics in the Public Service and also have several other forthcoming publications.
